Sagar’s History and Culture

a table with South Indian vegetarian dishes

Our chefs originate from Udupi, a small town which rests in the coastal region of the Western Ghats, in Karnataka – some 60 km from Bangalore. There, a famous temple houses an idol of Lord Krishna richly adorned in jewels. The town is a knowledge centre for authentic South Indian cuisine. Udupi chefs are renowned for the cooking of traditional, South Indian vegetarian food.

About the Area: Udupi

Krishna Temple in Udupi India

Known as ‘the temple city’, Udupi is also a centre of pilgrimage, and a hive of vegetarian cuisine – one of its most famous exports including the much-loved masala dosa!

The all-important religious festival of Paryaya is held bi-annually at the Kanakanak Hindhi temple, witnessed by scores of pilgrims and tourists alike. At Sagar, we are proud to be a part of the very special history of Udupi, and to be bringing a portion of our heritage to UK shores to share with you all.

About the Art

Udupi Indian Art

The state of Karnatake, in which Udupi is found, is the home of a rich artistic tradition that takes root in the form of music and dance, costume, and painting – most importantly, Mysore painting.

Mysore painting is notable for its delicate use of lines and brush strokes; its muted, earthy palette; its graceful, decorative figurative style; and the feelings of devotion and humility it seeks to invoke in the viewer. Mysore paintings deal primarily with the lives and interactions of Hindu gods and goddesses, and their role in the region’s culture, history and mythology.
